Previous Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James Comey has entered an innocent plea to making false statements to congressional representatives and impeding a congressional proceeding.

His lawyer entered the answer representing him in a national courtroom in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday morning.

The defense lawyer stated he would attempt to have the case terminated for several causes including that his client, a critic of Donald Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.

James Comey was charged shortly after Trump pushed his top legal official to move forward against him.

Court Developments

During the hearing on mid-week, his attorney the legal representative advised the judge they planned to present several legal requests to throw out the proceedings before a trial, arguing the prosecution was spiteful and that a US attorney was unlawfully assigned to handle the legal matter.

The former director's legal matter was initially managed by Erik Siebert, who left his position under scrutiny from Donald Trump after his investigation into a different opponent - NY AG Letitia James - was unable to file indictments.

Judicial Environment

Mr Comey seemed in good spirits as he entered the courtroom on mid-week, conversing with his lawyers and sharing humor. He was accompanied by his spouse, Patrice Failor and daughter his daughter, a federal prosecutor who the former government terminated.

Upon hearing to the magistrate read his legal protections and the dual charges against him in legal proceedings on Wednesday, Mr Comey was questioned if he understood the charges.

"Absolutely your honour. Thank you," he stated to the court.

Previous Events

The former director was the head of the FBI from 2013-2017 and was terminated about several months into Trump's initial presidency as national leader. At the time, the director was directing an probe into Russian election interference and whether there were any connections between Moscow and Trump's campaign.

While in office, the director sparked a counter-response from the Democratic party when he declared just days before the 2016 presidential election that he was investigating presidential nominee the candidate's use of a private email server. Indictments against Hillary Clinton were not filed, causing negative feedback from the Republican party as well.

Current Allegations

Government attorneys claim Mr Comey gave untrue statements to US lawmakers during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in 2020 when he was being interrogated about both the previous examination as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They allege he misled the Senate by stating he had not authorized someone at the agency to leak to news outlets information about the FBI investigations.

Legal representatives also accuse James Comey of "corruptly endeavoring to sway, block and impede" the legislative group by giving misleading testimony to it.

Individual Responses

Through a recording James Comey shared to his Instagram after he was indicted, he stated he was wrongly accused and alleged the former president of behaving like a "dictator".

"My family and I have been aware for a long time that there are consequences to opposing Mr Trump," he commented. "We refuse to live on our knees."
"I'm innocent," he added. "Thus initiate a trial."

The charges against Mr Comey surfaced after the former president posted on online platforms demanding his attorney general, Ms Bondi, take legal action against James Comey and additional individuals.
